I have worked with many organizations, from a variety of industries, and they all have some things in common.

Defined Leadership. Leaders of strong organizations know themselves and they lead with confidence and compassion. There is no room for wishy-washy, weak leadership today. Leaders can be strong and humble. To be strong is to bring in the knowledge, resources, and capabilities you need in order to process and make decisions. Too often, we see leaders waiting for more information, waiting for the right time and/or not wanting to rock the boat to bring more change to their organization. The reality is that most of the time, any decision is better than no decision. Employees want to follow decisive strength.

Preparation. They do the hard work of preparing strong relationships and systems so that when uncertainty arrives, or when chaos ensues, they are ready. They have the foundation of trusting in each other, of relying on what works because they know what works. They recognize their shortcomings and have already dealt with how to compensate.

Listen. Creating a safe, trusting environment for employees to tell you what they really think is vital for successful companies. Leaders should recognize the value and knowledge of their employees. At all levels in the organization, people have differing views of a situation, client, or initiative. When we open the dialogue to invite employees to tell us what they think, what excites them at work, and/or what they worry about, then we start seeing the whole picture. Without this openness, leaders see one vantage point … and that may not be the whole story.
